Attacking Side Kicks –

1️⃣ Lift & Carry 2️⃣ Lift & Shoot⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Both options can be very effective in ITF Sparring and have their own objectives.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

1️⃣ Lift & Carry⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

  • This is where the attacker lifts and shifts into contact to close the distance.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
  • The body is often more upright with tall posture here to make it easier to carry having the centre of gravity neutral⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
  • This a great option to get to hands afterwards and close the distance, hence you’ll see the hands usually in a more prepared position ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
  • This option builds momentum and places pressure on the opponent & very common as an initiation shot in ITF.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
  • This kick often lands with a slightly bent leg compared to option 2 below⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
    ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

2️⃣ Lift & Shoot ⠀

  • This is where the attacker pre judges the distance and determines they can land a side kick to the body at full reach⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
  • Why the body? This is the most direct line between you and the opponent, which gives the most range possible on the shot.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
  • This is a good option as based on the distance it can be very hard to counter ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
  • Because of the distance, if it lands on the target it is a very clear and visible score for the judges also⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
  • This is often a direct single attack hence the hands are extended back for maximum reach⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
  • This kick is more of a stabbing motion with the technique landing with a straight leg⠀

🚩 Both of these kicks are highly effective and therefore very common in ITF. Those who can threaten their opponents with both, as well as changing levels to the body/head will have a very effective front leg to work from and build the rest of their game around.
