Every sport has 4 components ; physical, technical, tactical & psychological.
It’s fair to say in most sports we are very much focused on the first 3, and psychological is left to chance for the most part.
This is a vital part of the equation especially considering the added fear of individual combat for a lot of people. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
To overcome the fear of sparring and build self belief can be a major advantage.
Fears and beliefs are both interconnected. Beliefs are a combination of our genetic make up and the evidence we experience.
To tackle fear we must first explore our beliefs surrounding fear. What are we fearful of?
Usually it’s failure once we realise we are not made of glass and dont break if we take a hit.
Failure is certainly a real fear but our beliefs surrounding fear is what causes the added stress of anxiety which leads to fear.
This is an emotional response to our personal beliefs about failure. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The first step is to identify where this belief which is causing fear came from?
Once we can identify this, it’s important to rationalise our perception of this belief.
Then we must replace this old belief with new ones, through a change of perception and/or through evidence which falsifies this belief.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
One approach is to build a Mastery Climate around your training and performance, or for any area of your life for that matter.
A mastery climate is where instead of us focusing on results, winning, opponents etc.
We simply focus all our attention to competing against ourselves to bring attention on effort.
Focusing on your effort and self improvement helps to bring attention inward.
All we ever have control of is our effort, results are not in our control.
The best thing is when you follow a mastery climate approach, the winning and results will look after themselves.
Instead of placing your self worth on winning or losing and this causing fear, instead take pride in self improvement.
Measuring evidence of improvement and focusing on the only two things you do have control over ;
1: your effort/work rate
2:the attitude you choose
