Despite the traditional belief in Taekwon-Do, I personally believe Instructor is an outdated term for those who teach Taekwon-Do.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
A coach is not just someone who attends tournaments with their students/athletes and sits in the chair ringside.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
A coach is someone who does it all!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
An Instructor essentially is someone who stands at the top of a room and shouts instructions, people follow.⠀

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In 2021, I don’t believe anyone who teaches Taekwon-Do does so in the traditional sense like an “Instructor”. (If so, your school/club will probably not ever have many students anyway)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Realistically we are all coaches! If you support, build relationships and connections with, guide and have two-way communication with your students, you are not an Instructor, you are a coach! Even if you’ve never even had 1 student compete before.

This is a topic Adrian & I have spoken about recently, as there is miscommunication with the terms “coach” & “Instructor”.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Mr Byrne is doing tremendous work with the ITF Coaches Committee, and this is just a small area he is working on. Clarifying that the term Coach and Instructor, are in essence the same role in respect of ITF Taekwon-Do.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I’m guessing it comes from the original translation of the word from Korean combined with the Military (Drill Sargent-esque) background of Martial Arts.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In this day and age though, I think the role has evolved like everything does. If all you do is shout instructions from the top of the class and have no interaction or communication with your students, ok then you are an Instructor.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
For everyone else, I imagine the term coach is much more accurate for all the “Instructors” I’ve personally come across.

Now I know the blog title is a little provocative, but that’s what’s needed to get you to read in 2021 😉

I’m not saying there are no Instructors in Taekwon-Do, but rather the work Instructors do is much more than simply Instruct! That’s why the terms should be used more interchangeably. As far as terms go, Coach & Instructor includes us all.

It’s not about removing the term Instructor but including all teachers of Taekwon-Do under the interchangeable term of coach or instructor. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
